How important to your body is Folic Acid & B-12? Very!
By Janet L. Hall, MA, CKP, CBT
One patient who started on the recommended Active Folate (Folic Acid or B9) and Methylcobalamin (a form of B-12) that tested for her body exclaimed: “My whole system seems to be running harmoniously for the first time in a very, very, long time! I haven’t felt this balanced for ages!”
My last article dealt with gluten intolerance and the role of genetics and methylation in being healthy. This time, I am emphasizing the importance of active folate and especially methylcobalamin as they tie in together.
Folic Acid is crucial for many things, but especially brain function, mental and emotional health. Neurotransmitters rely on Folic Acid and B-12. People already stressed out add coffee, cokes, tea and energy drinks to their already unbalanced cortisol levels producing high irritation. B-12 counteracts that; maintaining nerve and spinal cord health.
Folic Acid and B-12 aid in the production of RNA/DNA – the actual genetic material the body is made of! Therefore, we use 5MTHF (5-methylfolate) and various forms of B-12 when applying supplementation. This assures fast, accurate results.
Pregnancy, infancy and adolescence are critical times that enough Folic Acid must be present and highly absorbed. A deficiency can cause birth defects, poor growth, behavioral disorders and more.
The elderly need Folic Acid and B-12 for cardiovascular support and absorption factors that decline with aging. Without it, they become mentally sluggish, forgetful, irritable, hard of hearing and develop a lack of appetite.
Other signs can be headaches, unexplained diarrhea, inflammatory bowel conditions and anemia. A large part of alcoholism, celiac bowel disease and gluten intolerance can be traced to Folic Acid deficiency as well. Think about it; it has been found that almost half of Americans have an Active Folate deficiency!
Methylation is one of the most important metabolic functions of the body! Health and vitality highly depend on how well your body methylates and is bringing the properly grouped carbon and hydrogen atoms to your cells and tissues. This includes proper glutathione, Folic Acid and B-12 used in detoxification and immune stabilization.
